CNN —A hacking group with ties to the Russian government is suspected of carrying out a cyberattack in January that caused a tank at a Texas water facility to overflow, experts from US cybersecurity firm Mandiant said Wednesday. Muleshoe officials replaced the hacked software system and took other steps to secure the network, Sanchez said. “Regulations have not required this low-hanging fruit to be addressed,” Serino told CNN. “I’ve never experienced this before but … we’re aware that those threats are out there,” Poling told CNN by phone. “The haphazardness is part of their pathological emphasis on psychological impact,” Dan Black, a Mandiant analyst, told CNN.

In 1940, Benjamin O. Davis Sr. became the first Black person to achieve the rank of brigadier general in the US Army. Twenty years after his father made history, Davis Jr. became the first Black brigadier general in the Air Force in 1960. Davis Sr. was born in Washington, DC, less than 20 years after the ratification of the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery. So, Davis Jr. moved alone to Chicago for nearly two years to secure the nomination and his spot at West Point. “So, (the Army) provided no opportunities for African Americans to lead troops, it provided no opportunities before 1940 for African Americans to fly airplanes, there were no African Americans in the Marine Corps,” Moye added.

The crash diets have crashed, the brand-new budgets won’t budge and your Peloton is now the world’s most expensive laundry rack. But even if every one of your New Year’s resolutions is toast, there’s still one start-of-the-year chore you would be wise to handle: your retirement review. This is a perfect time to take stock of where your retirement is heading — whether you’re still on the job or have stopped working and are now collecting Social Security — financial planners say. Nearly all of them will need to support themselves for decades. Whether you are still working or already retired, reviewing your retirement plan and how it’s shaping up when compared with reality is a crucial step, said Michael Crews, author of the book “Saturday Everyday” and chief executive of North Texas Wealth Management in Allen, Texas.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Thousands of Texas Rangers fans were already lined up along a 2-mile stretch near the team's ballpark hours before a parade Friday to celebrate the franchise's first World Series championship. The parade comes two days after the Rangers wrapped up the World Series with a 5-0 win on the road in Game 5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It came a week after Texas won the series opener on an 11th-inning homer by Adolis García after Corey Seager hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to tie the game. World Series MVP Seager, AL Championship Series MVP García and all of the Rangers players were expected to participate in the parade in the entertainment district of Arlington, the city where they play along Interstate 30 halfway between downtown Fort Worth and downtown Dallas. All-Star second baseman Marcus Semien exited first, hoisting the World Series trophy into the air as he stepped out of the plane.

During baseball season, the public buses in Houston flash a message as they rumble through the city: “Go Astros! !”A similar sort of communal baseball spirit has not typically surrounded the Texas Rangers, a team whose claim to the hearts of all Texans had, until their World Series victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, been stymied by having never won a championship in their 51 years since relocating to the North Texas city of Arlington. Wedged between Dallas and Fort Worth, the city forms an almost seamless part of a sprawling urban agglomeration, a fast-growing and sports-crazed area of a fast-growing and sports-crazed state, where winners are prized and football — in particular, the Dallas Cowboys — has been dominant. But as the Rangers kept winning and winning, fans emerged. Excitement in October became palpable across the connected cities.

CNN —On the eve of his Hall of Fame induction, NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki has said that his daughter is “mostly embarrassed” about any “hoopla” surrounding her dad. Alongside the German, two-time NBA champion Pau Gasol, four-time NBA champion Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, Dwyane Wade and the 1976 U.S. Olympic Women’s basketball team, among others, will be inducted. However, at a press conference on Tuesday, Nowitzki admitted that his impending inauguration has not yet fully resonated with his children. Nowitzki scored 35,223 points across 21 seasons in Dallas, playing 1,667 games for the only NBA team he ever featured for – only John Stockton played more games for one team across his career. His crowning moment arguably came in 2011 when he led the Mavs to the NBA title, the organization’s first and only championship in its history.

It wasn’t just high temperatures breaking records: The city also set a new record warm low temperature of 97 degrees during the streak. It's official, this July was the hottest month in Phoenix on record, with an average temperature of 102.7°F. The fear of a surge in heat-related deaths prompted the Maricopa County medical examiner to bring in 10 refrigerated containers last week to handle a possible overflow of bodies.

Anti-LGBTQ+ activism spiked in June, according to the monitoring group ACLED. Pride Month saw more anti-LGBTQ+ demonstrations than any other period since 2020. As the LGBTQ+ community has become increasingly visible in entertainment, politics, and corporate America, there has been an accompanying spike in anti-LGBTQ+ activism. "This new peak in our data comes after anti-LGBTQ+ demonstrations had already surged to their highest point on record by late 2022." That — visibly showing up for LGBTQ+ rights — is what Bjorn-James argues will determine whether far-right activism proliferates or recedes.

“The Supreme Court has characterized academic freedom as a special concern of the First Amendment,” said Ramya Krishnan, a lawyer at the Knight First Amendment Institute. The lawsuit said that Jacqueline Vickery, an associate professor at the University of North Texas and a digital media scholar, had been forced to “suspend research projects and change her research agenda, alter her teaching methodology, and eliminate course material,” because of the ban. The Texas ban also appears to extend to her personal cellphone based on her use of university email and other apps there, the lawsuit said. Ms. Vickery said in an interview that she had not been able to access TikTok since the university returned from winter break, even for an assignment where she wanted her students to read the privacy terms on TikTok’s site. The ban’s effect on her classes and research has been “really challenging,” particularly as she does not have a personal laptop, she said.

CNN —Texas’s ban on TikTok at state institutions violates the First Amendment, claims a lawsuit filed Thursday by a group of academics and civil society researchers. The lawsuit specifically challenges Texas’ TikTok ban in relation to public universities, saying it compromises academic freedom and impedes vital research. Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered all Texas state agencies to ban the use of TikTok in early December. The Knight Institute lawsuit notes that Texas has not imposed a ban on other online platforms that collect similar user data, such as Meta and Google. TikTok told CNN last month that it is funding the suit by users and creators on the platform.

Some construction crews in Texas are no longer guaranteed water breaks under a new law. Critics say the law will override the few protections that construction workers in Austin and Houston are guaranteed, including 10-minute breaks every four hours to drink water and rest in the shade. The agency in 2021 started collecting information to help inform a national heat standard for indoor and outdoor workers, but a final rule could be years away. Mahaleris said the law wouldn't prohibit people from taking water breaks. A powerful storm struck the northern Texas town of Matador on Wednesday night, killing at least four people, damaging about a dozen buildings and prompting a search for residents who might have been injured or trapped by debris, the authorities said. At least nine people were hurt. The storm swept through the small town of about 600 residents as thousands of people across the region were sweltering in a triple-digit heat wave that may not ease until the Fourth of July, and as other storms earlier in the week spawned deadly tornadoes and punishing hail across the South. A tornado warning was issued for Matador, roughly 300 miles northwest of Dallas, as the storm barreled through around 8 p.m., said William Iwasko, a National Weather Service meteorologist. He said the damage suggested there was “most likely” a tornado, but that had not been confirmed as of early Thursday morning.

Image: StoryfulAuthorities said Tuesday that the gunman they said was responsible for killing eight people at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas, legally obtained the weapons he used and had neo-Nazi ideation, but said they don’t believe he targeted a specific group of people. Hank Sibley , North Texas regional director for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said it appeared to him that Mauricio Garcia targeted the Allen Premium Outlets as a location and not anyone specifically. Among the dead were women, men and children, some of them of Asian descent. Seven people were wounded in the shooting.
